Uthama Puthiran, which featured PU Chinappa, was the first Tamil feature film to have the hero in dual roles, and ever since its release in the year 1940, the fascination to see their favourite stars in multiple roles started to arise among the hardcore movie buffs. And it was an era that was literally not technically advanced. Eighteen years later, Sivaji Ganesan was seen in dual roles in a movie that was released under the same title. Dual roles soon paved way for triple roles but it was Sivaji Ganesan’s Navarathri, released in 1964, which had the star in nine different roles, that still remains etched out in our memories. Of course, Kamal Haasan outdid this with his Dasavatharam in 2008 by handling ten different roles with ease and élan. The Ulaga Nayagan, known for experimenting with his roles, was also seen in four different get-ups in Michael Madhana Kamarajan. Though there have been several multiple role starrers such as Rajinikanth’s Rajadhi Raja and Endhiran, the year 2014 seems to be very special for such films as almost all high budget films are either having its heroes in double or triple roles or get-ups. Director Lingusamy has confirmed that Suriya plays double roles in the upcoming film Anjaan. There is also a news that Kamal Haasan will be seen in dual roles in Uthama Villain and Vijay in the untitled film that AR Murugadoss is directing. The word among the trade sources is the Ajith is also likely to play double roles in the Gautham Menon film. Vadivelu, on the other hand, is reported to be playing the king as well as Thenali Raman in Jagajala Pujabala Thenaliraman, which is a historical comedy. To top it all, Rajinikanth will be seen in triple roles in the magnum opus Kochadaiiyaan. Well, the year 2014 is set to delight the audiences with the stars appearing in two or three different roles! It certainly guarantees value for every single rupee paid for! |
