The second look of Suriya's 'Thaana Sernda Kootam' was the most retweeted in 2017, till Virat and Anushka got married.
This year saw southern cinema ruling social media … until Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma decided to get married last weekend.
The couple, christened ‘Virushka’ by the media, broke the internet when they finally went official and Kohli’s tweet announcing their wedding was declared the Golden Tweet of 2017. His tweet got a whopping 88,446 retweets, and over 5 lakh ‘likes’ and counting.
Suriya’s tweet, which was declared the Golden Tweet just a week ago, has now fallen to the Number 2 spot. The actor unveiled the second look for his upcoming Tamil film, Thaana Serndha Kootam, and it quickly garnered 74,704 retweets.
With this, the skipper of the Indian cricket team has had the most retweeted tweet in India for the second year running – and coincidentally, both tweets have been about Anushka Sharma. Last year, when internet trolls went after Sharma, blaming her for Kohli’s drop in form, an angry Kohli tweeted asking everyone to show “compassion”.
In a series of tweets, each one more vicious than the last, trolls had linked Kohli’s performance to the couple’s alleged break-up. An angry Kohli took to Twitter to react, and it sparked rumours of a reconciliation between the two.
One of the top Twitter trends in India this year was #Mersal, which garnered over 1.7 million tweets in just three days. Other trending topics in entertainment included Baahubali 2 and the show Bigg Boss.
Twitter users in India also took to the platform to discuss current affairs as well, on topics such as the GST and the Supreme Court’s verdict on Triple Talaq. The channel has 10 million subscribers presently which translates to about $1 million a month in advertising revenue alone according to The Verge. Ryan shot to fame when his 2015 video - where he unboxes a 'Giant Egg Surprise' which contained over 100 toys from Pixar's 'Cars' series- went viral and got over 800 million views. While Ryan is the face of the channel, all the production and editing of his videos is done by his parents while he is at school.
THE POSTER SHOWS ACTOR SHIVA DOING A REMARKABLE IMITATION OF OPS’S MEDITATION AT THE JAYALALITHAA MEMORIAL IN JANUARY.
Movie promotion is as much of an art as making the movie itself. And it seems the makers of Tamizh Padam 2.0 are ticking all the right boxes.
If you thought their dig at the infamous movie pirates Tamil Rockers in their first poster was hilarious, the team have just raised the bar with their second look poster. Taking its trademark parody culture to a new level, the poster features actor Shiva, the star of the comedy franchise, pulling an O Panneerselvam. Dressed in a crisp white shirt and veshti, Shiva sits meditating in front of a memorial, while a host of photographers click pictures of him in the background. The resemblance is unmistakable. Shiva looks exactly like Deputy Chief Minister OPS did, when he meditated at the Jayalalithaa memorial just before setting off an unprecedented rebellion in the ruling AIADMK, the dust of which is still to settle.
The second look poster has got people all over social media ROFLing, with the tweet by makers Y Not Studios getting over 500 retweets and over 1,500 likes within the first four hours.
And considering how much fun trolls and meme-makers had with the original OPS rebellion, it was inevitable that this poster would draw them all out again.
For the uninitiated, Tamizh Padam 2.0 is a sequel to the 2010 parody film starring Shiva and Disha Pandey, helmed by director CS Amudhan, who’s taking the reins this time around too.
The sequel, which was officially launched on Thursday, also reportedly stars Aishwarya Menon, Disha Pandey, Sathish, Santhana Bharathi, Manobala, R Sundarrajan, Nizhalgal Ravi and Chethan. The team’s first look poster set Twitter aflutter when it announced that Tamizh Padam 2.0 will release on May 25, 2018, and that there will be a ‘Tamil Rockers release’ the very next day. Poking fun at the heartburn the online pirates cause the industry by releasing all latest movies within days of their theatrical release, the first look poster called Tamil Rockers the film’s “official piracy partner”. The internationally popular film database website has released the list of most popular Indian stars this year. Mumbai: With the conclusion of 2017 nearing, the awards and polls season also kicks off, as was evident with a popular film awards show being held last week.
While those awards were based more on performances, here is a list based on statistics. Popular worldwide film database website IMDb has announced the Top Indian filmstars of the year, based on StarMeter stats and page views. The three Khans, Shah Rukh, Aamir and Salman, who have been ruling the industry for more than 25 years now, have also ruled this list, taking the top three spots respectively. The next set of trio to dominate the list are the actors from the blockbuster ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’, which shattered box office records galore this year. Tamannaah Bhatia, who only had a miniscule part in the sequel of ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, was placed at number 4, well ahead of the titular character Prabhas, who took the sixth position. Prabhas’ romantic interest in the film Anushka Shetty took the number eight spot in the list. Among other popular stars, Anushka Sharma, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif were placed seventh, ninth and tenth respectively, while internationally recognised star Irrfan Khan, who delivered a hit with ‘Hindi Medium’, was at number 5. However, the absence of Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, who have massive following worldwide, from the list is surprising. Check the list here FROM DIRECTOR ANJALI MENON TO ACTORS MANJU WARRIER AND PARVATHY, SEVERAL WOMEN FROM THE WCC SPEAK ON WHAT THE COLLECTIVE STANDS FOR. The Women in Cinema Collective, which was established soon after a prominent woman actor from the Malayalam film industry was abducted and assaulted earlier this year, has come up with a video that speaks about what the group stands for. The Collective has staunchly stood by the survivor, even as other film organisations like AMMA scrambled to defend actor Dileep, who is accused of being the mastermind behind the conspiracy which led to the attack. However, the WCC has also met with criticism for "not doing anything". Some women from the industry have also said that they don't see the need for such an organisation since they've never faced any such harassment. The video titled 'WCC Introduction' starts with director Anjali Menon speaking about the need to create an environment in cinema where men and women can work together happily and can expect safety, security and opportunity equally. Director Geethu Mohandas, addressing the question why others were not "invited" to be part of the WCC says, "The truth of the matter is, we invited ourselves. Women from the creative fields, from different walks of life, we empowered each other. This is our strength." Geethu goes on to add that change is required and that the change must happen now. Actor and director Revathy, screenwriter Deedi Damodaran, actor and director Sajitha Madathil, speak about how it's necessary for women to take charge and work towards equality in every sphere, including cinema. Actor Rima Kallingal says a section of women have recognised that it's time they started thinking and acting for themselves rather than someone else telling them how to go about it. Editor and director Bina Paul says that the Collective will give a sense of unity to not just women in the Malayalam industry but all over the country. Screenwriters Vidhu Vincent and Dr Asha Anchy Joseph point out that the Collective is also about recognising gender inequality and stereotypes that are propagated in the name of cinema. Vidhu adds that it's unnecessary for men to be "afraid" of the WCC and that they are working with the support of male allies within the industry. Screenwriter and director Sreebala K Menon says it's time that the role of women in 90 years of Malayalam cinema came to be known to the world. Actor Padmapriya says that it will take a long time for organisations like the WCC to change rigid social ideas about women. Screenwriter Indhu Nampoothiri notes that WCC is interested in seeing how they can contribute towards making this social change. Actors Ramya Nambessan and Parvathy, and music director and singer Sayanora Philip refer to the survivor's courage and her will to not give up and say that the WCC was formed to ensure no other woman undergoes what she had to. Cinematographer Fowzia Fathima and director Soumya Sadanand say that the WCC was established to change the cinema industry to a space where a woman can work with dignity and that the gender sensitivity we expect to see on screen should also be reflected in how cinema is made. Speaking at the end of the video, actors Manju Warrier and Rima Kallingal say any woman in cinema who believes in the ideas that the WCC stands for is welcome to join them and that they look forward to the support of allies. Other women who have made it to the Google Doodle list this year include Begum Akhtar, Cornelia Sorabji, and Anasuya Sarabhai. Codenamed Dalda 13 in the photo archives, she also went by that pseudonym. Her pseudonym comes from the year of her birth – 1913 – and the Dalda from her car’s number plate DLD 13. The Padma Vibhushan awardee was born in a Parsi family in Gujarat, and much of her childhood was spent travelling with her father’s travelling theatre company. She later moved to Bombay, now Mumbai, and studied at Bombay University and Sir J J School of Art. A friend taught her photography, and she started exploring life in Bombay through her camera lens early on, starting to work as a photographer professionally in her late teens.
Her career took off after her marriage to Manekshaw Vyarawalla, who worked as an accountant and a photographer for Times of India. Her photos were initially published under his name, or her pseudonym. Her work soon started gaining national attention, and in 1942 she had moved to Delhi with her family to work at the British Information Services. Here she photographed world leaders such as Ho Chi Minh, and American Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, and the first ladies, Mamie Eisenhower and Jacqueline Kennedy. She also photographed Queen Elizabeth II’s State visit, and the Dalai Lama who had just escaped Tibet. Some of her best work, however, came during Independence. Her key works include photographs of Mahatma Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru, the latter being her favourite subject. Some of her notable pictures that resonated with the masses were of Nehru addressing jubilant crowds in Delhi, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy departing from India, and Gandhi being prepared for the funeral. Soon after her husband’s death, in 1970, she gave up photography disappointed with the change the profession had undergone. In 1982, she moved to Vadodara with her son Farooq who she lost to cancer in 1989. Later on, she handed her collection of photographs to the Delhi-based Alkazi Foundation for the Arts. In 2011, she was awarded the second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. She died in Vadodara on January 15, at the age of 98 due to a lung disease. In 1998, Sabeena Gadihoke from Jamia Milia Islamia University made a documentary on Homai and two other photographers titled ‘Three Women and a Camera’. Sabeen also wrote Homai’s biography – Camera Chronicles of Homai Vyarawalla – which was published in 20o6. The biography celebrates her work and her contribution to photojournalism especially as a lone woman in a field that continues to be male-dominated even today. Homai’s Google Doodle today is a reminder of her contribution, her will to succeed despite the odds, and an inspiration who shows nothing is impossible. South Indian cinema has already made its mark on Twitter this year, with Mersal and Baahubali 2 being two of the top trends on the microblogging site. Turns out, it was also one of the top trending videos on YouTube India in 2017. The video propelled Sheril G Kadavan, a teacher, to instant fame, and went on to spur a turf war of sorts. The ‘Jimikki Kammal’ performance by the students dressed in traditional Onam attire was the second most-watched video on YouTube, after ‘BB ke Vines – group study’. The performance is sure to bring a smile to your face and get your feet tapping all over again. Astrology occupies an important place in the hearts of many Indians, with several taking predictions at face value rather than with a generous pinch of salt. Indian astrologer Venu Swamy, who has earlier ‘predicted’ the future of various celebrities, has now done a detailed prediction on Ivanka Trump, using her date of birth and place of birth. Dressed in a yellow shirt and dhoti, with a blank mobile blackboard, a video shows him chalking out the position of the planets of Ivanka’s horoscope. The video goes on to talk about her relationship with her father and US President Donald Trump, the number of marriages Donald and Ivanka’s mother Ivana has had, her marriage to Jared Kushner, her kids and so on. He talks largely about information that's already available in the public domain about Ivanka and correlates it with the ‘position of the planets’. Towards the end of the video, the astrologer makes "groundbreaking" predictions that include, “She might suffer from back pain because of her hectic schedule. Secondly, there could be a misunderstanding between the couple (Ivanka and Jared) again. There could be problems in her marriage. She might face problems in marriage after 12 years (their wedding was in 2009), which is in 2021. Except for these two problems, Ivanka’s horoscope looks great.” He also goes on to talk about lesser known facts, such as, “the main reason that today Donald Trump is the President of a country like America is because of Ivanka Trump. Very few know about that. If Donald is sitting in the President seat, it is because of Ivanka.” Earlier, Venu Swamy ‘predicted’ the Samantha and Naga Chaitanya wedding, the future chief ministers of the Telugu states, the controversy surrounding Vijay Devarakonda’s film Arjun Reddy, Revanth Reddy’s political future and more. Venu Swamy became obsessed with the life of Ivanka after she visited Hyderabad to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. A dinner was also hosted for her and other delegates at Hyderabad’s famed Falaknuma Palace. Venu Swamy even has an app, which describes him as an astrologer for ‘women, political and cinema fields’.
