Climate of Chennai is Tropical.
Chennai is situated in the Thermal Equator zone which prevents extreme changes in temperature. Chennai has mainly two seasons - summer (35-42°C / 95-108°F) Apr-Jun (Highest temperature ever recorded is 45°C / 113°F on 30 May 2003) and monsoon (Oct-Dec). It receives scanty rainfall from the south-west monsoon (Jun-Sep) while rest of India is lashed by heavy rains, but gets its bountiful rains from the north-east monsoon from October through December, thus amounting to about 125-150 cm (49-59 in) of rainfall annually. Rainfalls occur usually from October to December and dried up scrub lands bloom with greenery during this period. December to February are the mildest months temperature - (19-28°C / 66-82°F). December to March is probably the best time to visit Chennai: the temperatures rarely exceed 30°C during midday and evenings are pleasant. Climate is humid pretty much throughout the year because the city is on the coast. Summers are very hot and humid. Be sure take along light (not flimsy) clothing. Winter fashion has never been of any use in Chennai, wearing a sweater will leave you drenched in sweat in less than five minutes. As it lies very close to the equator, there is small fluctuation in seasonal temperature. The mercury rises to 40'C during the summer months but the average temperature in the winters revolves around 24'C. People of Chennai enjoy monsoon rains from June to September. Weather in Chennai remains moderate all through the year. People need to wear lightweight clothes and carry an umbrella all through the year. Chennai gets 1,300 mm of rainfall annually. Monsoon rains occur with the advent of the Northeast Monsoon Winds. The city is sometimes affected by the cyclones from the Bay of Bengal. Winters also receive moderate amount of rainfall. In Chennai, the months of April and May are considered to be the the hottest months of the Summer season when the mercury exceeds 40oC. The coastal regions of the city remain quite warm and humid but the cool sea breeze bring relief to the city. Nights are quiet pleasant that the daytime. The rainy season appear with the arrival of Northeast monsoon and it lasts till late November. Winter are preferable and remains from November to February and the temperature doesn't go below 20'C. People of Chennai experiences winter monsoons during the month of October to December. During this time the lowest temperatures swing between 18°C to 20°C in the months of December and January. |
