FARRUKHABAD, UTTAR PRADESH: 49 babies died in a month at a government hospital in Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh, it has emerged just days after the child deaths at a hospital in Gorakhpur last month. Grieving parents have blamed a shortage of medicine and oxygen, in a tragic replay of the Gorakhpur deaths. The state government, however, emphatically denied it today.
19 of the children who died at the Ram Manohar Lohia district hospital were still-born, say officials. The deaths took place between July 20 and August 21, when there were over 460 deliveries in the hospital. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's office stepped in and asked for an inquiry last evening after the local media attributed the deaths to an oxygen shortage like in Gorakhpur, his home base. "Oxygen is not an issue in the entire episode. I think, of late, we are generating undue sensitivity to oxygen. It has become more of a buzzword," said Prashant Trivedi, UP's Principal Secretary, Health. "No death took place due to lack of oxygen. The matter should not be blown out of proportion," insisted another official, Awanish Awasthi. The hospital's Chief Medical Officer Uma Kant Pandey, Medical Superintendent Akhilesh Agarwal and another doctor Kailash Kumar, have been removed but the state government has denied that the action is linked to a police complaint filed by district magistrate Ravindra Kumar, the first official sent to investigate the reports of children dying. Mr Kumar, who reportedly listed oxygen shortage as a cause, was transferred today. According to the state government, he had conducted his investigation on the phone. "This is not the right way to conduct a magisterial probe," said Mr Trivedi. Mr Kumar's report said "30 children died mostly due to perinatal asphyxia (a condition in which a newborn can't breathe normally). During the probe, parents informed that there was delay in providing oxygen and medicine...The children died due to lack of adequate supply of oxygen." The state government has now asked another top health official to carry out a fresh investigation. Around 400 km away in Gorakhpur, child deaths brought the spotlight on the town's biggest government hospital. Over 30 children, mostly newborns, died within two days last month of various causes including oxygen shortage. Sayyeshaa made her debut in Jayam Ravi’s jungle drama Vanamagan. Star India on Monday bagged the Indian Premier League media rights for a whopping Rs 16347.5 crore for a period of five years from 2018-2022. In an intense bidding war in Mumbai, Star India pipped 23 other top companies participating in the auction.
The IPL media rights auction, segregated into two categories -- broadcast and digital (internet and mobile) rights -- was expected to yield to the BCCI an estimated earning of over 20,000 crore through the traditional bidding process. Bids were also invited for five other categories - US, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and rest of the world. Earlier, BCCI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rahul Johri had said that the revenue generation from the upcoming IPL media rights auction could be "historic", considering the huge interest shown by various stakeholders. A total of 24 bidders bought the bid document, including Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Yahoo, Reliance Jio, Star India, Sony Pictures, Discovery, Sky, British Telecom, and ESPN Digital Media. In 2008, when the IPL started, roughly six companies purchased the bid document for the first rights cycle. All were television entities and, eventually, only two qualified for the bid -- the Sony-World Sports Group alliance and Nimbus. As many as seven rights were up for for bidding. For the Indian market, bids were divided into television and digital; then there were separate bids for the US, Europe, Middle East, Africa regions, and the rest of the world. The rights were awarded to the highest bidder in each category. Previously, the BCCI, which owns the IPL, had sold the rights only for three categories: India television rights, India digital rights and rest of the world. The 18 eligible companies which bought bid documents last year before the process was stalled were: Star India, Amazon Seller Services, Followon Interactive Media, Taj TV India, Sony Pictures Networks, Times Internet, Supersport International, Reliance Jio Digital, Gulf DTH FZ LLC, GroupM Media, beIN, Econet Media, SKY UK, ESPN Digital Media, BTG Legal Services, BT PLC, Twitter, Facebook Inc.
