Several committees were appointed by the Union Government post-independence to go into the feasibility of the project and all decided against it. Vast numbers of Hindus celebrated on Wednesday the affirmation in an American science channel that Ram Setu, an undersea bridge between the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar, is indeed man-made. The promo of the show called 'Ancient Land Bridge' received huge positive response from across the globe, more so in India, much before the actual show itself got aired Wednesday evening (India time), with Union Information and Broadcasting minister Smriti Irani retweeting the video with the caption, 'Jai Shri Ram'.
The US channel supports the theory that the bridge, also known as Adam's Bridge, is man-made based on the studies on the limestone shoals formation and also the findings from the study made by the scientists of the Indiana University Northwest, University of Colorado Boulder, and Southern Oregon University. “The sand bar (sea bed) may be natural but what is sitting on top of it is not”, said the narrator in the promo, while referring to the scientific findings that the rocks on top of the sand bar are 7,000 years old whereas the sand bar is only 4,000 years old. And that means that the rocks had been brought by someone and placed on the sand bar for making the bridge - the Ram Setu of Ramayana. Also, the US science channel affirmed what the protagonists of the Ram Setu in India have been claiming for centuries - that the limestone rocks did not belong to that sea area but were brought from elsewhere; in other words, their firm faith that the Hanuman Sena of Vanaras had lifted those rocks across from long distances for building the Setu to Lanka for Rama to rescue Sita from Ravana. Ram Setu was threatened by an ambitious Rs 2,427-crore project, called the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP) launched by the BJP government of Atal Behari Vajpayee in 2002 and carried forward with ample budgetary allocations by the successor UPA-I regime led by the Congress party to satisfy a prime demand from its key ally, the DMK, whose nominee T. R. Baalu was made the Shipping Minister and consecutively the man in charge of the mega project of mega bucks. The DMK said the 150-year dream of the Tamils should be implemented. The UPA Government had then sought to contest the petition filed in the Supreme Court by the Rameswaram Ram Setu protection committee by arguing that there was no evidence to show that Ram Setu was a place of worship - the DMK chief Karunanidhi had then remarked that Rama was just a mythological figure. That UPA affidavit was hastily withdrawn after a storm of protests from Hindus across the country. The project aimed at cutting short the distance navigated by the ships sailing between the ports in the west and the east coasts of the country, and vice versa. It was first conceived by Commander AD Taylor in 1860 during the British era but given up as unfeasible - though the ships those days were much smaller and there were no Ram Setu pressures then. Several committees were appointed by the Union Government post-independence to go into the feasibility of the project and all decided against it. Simply stated, it was unthinkable that an undersea dredging would be feasible as sea currents would constantly shift the sand and it would need millions of dollars to maintain the depth of 12 metres and width of 300 metres across the 152-km Sethusamudram shipping channel to allow the passage of ships of 32,000 DWT and below. The call of the shipping industry is even greater now as the favoured size of merchant ships is over 60,000 DWT and much closer to 1,00,000 DWT. The magazine saluted the Kansas man as the ‘bargoer who stepped into the line of fire. Houston: Time magazine has honoured Ian Grillot, the US national who took a bullet for an Indian while trying to intervene during a racially-motivated shooting in Kansas early this year.
Grillot’s name features in the magazine among “5 Heroes Who Gave Us Hope in 2017.” Grillot, then 24, was injured when he tried to intervene in the shooting by a Navy veteran targeting Indians at a bar in Olathe, Kansas, in February. Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32 , was killed in the shooting that also left his colleague Alok Madasani, critically injured. “I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if I didn’t do anything,” Grillot said in an article posted by Time on Thursday. The magazine saluted the Kansas man as the “bargoer who stepped into the line of fire.” “Without all the prayers and positive support from everybody, I wouldn’t be doing as well as I am right now. It has been a wonderful year and a blessing to be alive,” said Grillot. Earlier in 2017, Grillot was honoured as ‘A True American Hero’ by the Indian-American community in Houston which raised USD 100,000 to help him buy a house in his hometown Kansas. Grillot was watching a televised basketball game at the restaurant when a gunman approached Srinivas and Alok, both 32, and reportedly told them to “get out of my country.” Grillot was shot in the chest in an attempt to keep the assailant from harming others. Adam Purinton of Olathe has been charged with first- degree murder and attempted murder in the assaults. Others saluted by Time included a chef who fed Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto Rico, Houston neighbours who aided a woman having a baby in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and a California dog who refused to leave behind livestock he was guarding as wildfires raged. "I AM REALLY HORRIFIED THE WAY THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED AND AFTER THAT THE CREW DIDN'T HELP THIS GIRL," NCW CHAIRPERSON REKHA SINGH SAID. The National Commission for Women (NCW) as well as the Delhi and Maharashtra commissions for women on Sunday urged actress Zaira Wasim to file a police complaint after she alleged she was molested on a flight.
Zaira, (17), narrated through social media the ordeal she faced on a Vistara Airlines flight from Delhi to Mumbai, claiming that a middle-aged man sitting behind her, moved his foot up and down her neck and back. The NCW has stepped in to take action. Its chairperson Rekha Singh told the media, "I just saw the video on Instagram and my heart goes out to her. I am really horrified the way this incident happened and after that the crew didn't help this girl. That was very shocking because Vistara claims that it has zero tolerance and they have not sensitise their crew to take action against men who torturing women on flight.” "So, I am taking suo moto cognizance and giving notice to Vistara also a copy to DCP Maharashtra to act against the airlines. We would like to tell Zaira that we are there to help her out in any way we can," Singh added. Swati Maliwal of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) urged the Dangalactress to lodge a police complaint. "Highly condemnable. Urge Zaira Wasim to file police complaint. Accused should be arrested. Since flight was from Delhi to Mumbai, the DCW is issuing notice to Vistara Airlines seeking details of man, action taken by airlines and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) followed in such matters. Now even flights are unsafe for girls," Maliwal tweeted. Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar condemned it as a "shameful incident". "MSCW will direct DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) to conduct inquiry in the matter. We will inquire into the steps taken by Vistara to address the complaint. There should be inquiry about why the cabin crew did not help her. We have directed the Mumbai Police to look into the matter immediately. "It is sad that none of the co-passengers came ahead to help Zaira. We are with her, and will ensure she gets justice." On its part, Vistara Airlines has said it will investigate the issue. "We have seen the reports regarding Zaira Wasim experience with another customer on board last night. We are carrying out detailed investigation and will support Zaira in every way required. We have zero tolerance for such behaviour," read a post on the Airlines' official Twitter page. VENU SWAMY, AN ASTROLOGER, HAS MADE SEVERAL PREDICTIONS ABOUT IVANKA, NONE OF WHICH SURPRISED US. Astrology occupies an important place in the hearts of many Indians, with several taking predictions at face value rather than with a generous pinch of salt. Indian astrologer Venu Swamy, who has earlier ‘predicted’ the future of various celebrities, has now done a detailed prediction on Ivanka Trump, using her date of birth and place of birth. Dressed in a yellow shirt and dhoti, with a blank mobile blackboard, a video shows him chalking out the position of the planets of Ivanka’s horoscope. The video goes on to talk about her relationship with her father and US President Donald Trump, the number of marriages Donald and Ivanka’s mother Ivana has had, her marriage to Jared Kushner, her kids and so on. He talks largely about information that's already available in the public domain about Ivanka and correlates it with the ‘position of the planets’. Towards the end of the video, the astrologer makes "groundbreaking" predictions that include, “She might suffer from back pain because of her hectic schedule. Secondly, there could be a misunderstanding between the couple (Ivanka and Jared) again. There could be problems in her marriage. She might face problems in marriage after 12 years (their wedding was in 2009), which is in 2021. Except for these two problems, Ivanka’s horoscope looks great.” He also goes on to talk about lesser known facts, such as, “the main reason that today Donald Trump is the President of a country like America is because of Ivanka Trump. Very few know about that. If Donald is sitting in the President seat, it is because of Ivanka.” Earlier, Venu Swamy ‘predicted’ the Samantha and Naga Chaitanya wedding, the future chief ministers of the Telugu states, the controversy surrounding Vijay Devarakonda’s film Arjun Reddy, Revanth Reddy’s political future and more. Venu Swamy became obsessed with the life of Ivanka after she visited Hyderabad to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. A dinner was also hosted for her and other delegates at Hyderabad’s famed Falaknuma Palace. Venu Swamy even has an app, which describes him as an astrologer for ‘women, political and cinema fields’. You can watch the video here: Vishal was pleasantly surprised when he received congratulatory message from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Twitterati in India also took to social media to speak about a number of current affairs issues as well. Issues of law and policy such as GST, and Supreme Court’s verdict on Triple Talaq and Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim also found substantial traction on Twitter. In Tamil Nadu, of course, few other issues generated as much conversation as the protests around jallikattu. With the prominent hashtag of ‘Justice for Jallikattu’, heated discussions around Tamill culture and animal rights, made the bull-taming sport one of the biggest hot-button topics this year. MALLYA IS SET FOR AN EXTRADITION HEARING A joint team of CBI and ED is in London for the extradition hearing on Monday in a London court of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, wanted in India over non-payment of huge bank loans and a case of fraud and money laundering, an official said.
The CBI-ED team will assist their lawyers for securing Mallya's extradition -- the second extradition from the UK after signing an extradition treaty with the country 25 years ago. The extradition hearing is set for Monday in a Westminster Magistrates Court. Indian agencies told IANS they are confident of putting up solid evidence against Mallya and he should get extradited. According to sources, Mark Summers from Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will lead India's charge for the prosecution while Clare Montgomery will lead Mallya's defence. A CBI official said they have submitted a 2,000 page dossier on Mallya, detailing how he cheated Indian public sector banks and diverted the loans taken for Kingfisher Airlines over the years. Additional documentary evidence was also submitted in the Westminster Court recently, he added. Union Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju last month held a discussion over Mally's extradition with visiting UK Minister of State for Immigration Brandon Lewis. There are serious charges of financial irregularities against Mallya amounting Rs 9,000 crore. Samirbhai Vinubhai Patel was the first to be extradited from Britain to India in late 2016. He was wanted in connection with the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat. Mallya was rearrested on October 3 by police in London in connection with a fraud and money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and was released on bail by a London court soon after. Mallya left India on March 2, 2016 for London, days after a consortium of 17 banks moved the Debt Recovery Tribunal to recover dues of Rs 9,081 crore, including interest, that was loaned to his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines. In June. 2016 the Enforcement Directorate had told Interpol that it was "obligatory" on its part to issue a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against Mallya in connection with an alleged Rs 9000 crore bank loan fraud. In a detailed communication to Interpol, the agency had said that it had followed all legal procedures for seeking RCN against him. It has also said that orders were issued by the courts after hearing the counsels of ED and Mallya, officials said. Mallya has since offered to negotiate with the banks for a one-time settlement of dues and sought the Supreme Court's intervention. |
