WITH RAJAMOULI PLANNING TO ROPE BOTH THE STARS FOR HIS UPCOMING FILM, FANS ARE EAGER FOR INFORMATION. Ever since a pic of director SS Rajamouli flanked by Tollywood stars Jr NTR and Ram Charan Teja made it to the media, there have been various speculations about their upcoming film together.
Reports suggest that the film will be a sports drama and it will be penned by popular writer Gunnam Gangaraju with Rajamouli’s father Vijayendra Prasad overseeing its development. It is well known that Jr NTR is a top-class performer but when it comes to fitness levels, he has seemingly been inconsistent. On the other hand, Ram Charan has an enviable physique but when it comes to performance, some say that there is lot left to be desired. With SS Rajamouli planning to rope them both for his multi-starrer, fans are hoping that both the stars outsmart the other. Meanwhile, Ram Charan is busy with Rangasthalam that is expected to hit the silver screens in March. Directed by Sukumar, the film has Samantha Akkineni pairing up with Ram Charan for the first time. Others in the star cast of this period drama are Jagapati Babu, Rambha, Gouthami and Aadhi Pinisetty. Jr NTR’s last outing was Jai Lava Kusa which released a few months ago and the star’s next would be with Trivikram Srinivas. Jr NTR is currently on a holiday with his family in Europe and his film with Trivikam would go on to the floors once he returns to India. The director himself, is presently working on the Pawan Kalyan starrer Agnathavasi. This film is slated to hit the silver screens on January 10 as a Sankranti release. With SS Rajamouli roping in two of the best actors in the Telugu film industry, fans just can’t wait to hear more information, particularly about the rest of the cast and crew including the female leads. WITH 1.7 MILLION TWEETS IN THREE DAYS, #MERSAL WAS THE TOP HASHTAG TREND IN 2017.
2017 was all about the blockbuster for South Indian cinema, with hits like Mersal and Baahubali 2 ruling the roost. But it wasn’t just the Box Office, social media too caught the film fever, with these films becoming two of the most talked about trends on Twitter.
According to reports, both Mersal and Baahubali 2 featured as two of the most talked about moments of the microblogging site this year. Mersal, which was also the first Tamil film to get its own emoji, generated “colossal engagement from the fans of South Indian cinema”. The hashtag #Mersal garnered over 1.7 million tweets in just three days, which made it the top hashtag trend in 2017. Actor Suriya Sivakumar now has to his claim the Golden Tweet too. His tweet, which unveiled the second look for his Tamil film Thaana Serndha Kootam, became the most retweeted tweet in India in 2017.
And it wasn’t just cinema. The Bigg Boss franchise also caught a lot of attention online. Bigg Boss Tamil became another talked about moment of the year thanks to the massive attention that fan favourite Oviya generated online.
Twitterati in India also took to social media to speak about a number of current affairs issues as well. Issues of law and policy such as GST, and Supreme Court’s verdict on Triple Talaq and Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim also found substantial traction on Twitter. In Tamil Nadu, of course, few other issues generated as much conversation as the protests around jallikattu. With the prominent hashtag of ‘Justice for Jallikattu’, heated discussions around Tamill culture and animal rights, made the bull-taming sport one of the biggest hot-button topics this year. Indian sport was also in the limelight. With 1.8 million tweets, #INDvPAK in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final, became the most tweeted-about ODI on Twitter. The Mumbai Indians’ win by a single run at the IPL final also created substantial engagement.
Also in the limelight was the hashtag #wwc17 (ICC Women’s World Cup), which became the most popular hashtag in women’s sports in India.
THE ACTOR IS PLAYING A MUSEUM CURATOR IN 'DEVIL'S NIGHT: DAWN OF THE NAIN ROGUE'. opular Tamil character artiste Napoleon, best known for playing sickle-wielding, dhoti-clad and mustache-twirling characters over the years, has landed a pivotal role in a Hollywood film Devil’s Night: Dawn of the Nain Rouge, directed by Sam Logan Khalegi, who has an Emmy nomination to his credit.
Talking about how he landed the project, he told reporters in Chennai on Monday that he’s thrilled about his Hollywood debut. “One of the producers of the film, Tel Ganesh, is from my native, Trichy. We both know each other for a long time since we both run Software companies in the US. One day, he told me he’s going to produce a Hollywood film and he insisted that I should act in it. I told him I’m not sure because I cannot speak English and also have some film commitments in Tamil. But he was hell-bent on having me on board and agreed to shoot whenever I was free.” In the film, Napoleon plays a museum curator and he thoroughly enjoyed playing the character, the actor says. "The film is based on a true story and I shot for my scenes last October. We’re planning to release the film in Tamil as well as I want my fans to watch the film. We’ll make slight changes to the Tamil version and we have to shoot a few scenes for the same," he said. The film also stars popular rapper Eminem’s brother Nathan Mathers in an important role. Born as Kumaresan Duraiswamy, filmmaker Bharathiraja rechristened him as Napoleon. Recalling the incident when the director changed his name, he said: “I played a 60-year-old in my first film Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Naathu. A week before the film’s release, Bharathiraja sir said he’d like to change my name. I had suggested a few names but he wasn’t happy with any of them and chose Napoleon, but I wasn’t happy with the name. My friends mocked my new name but I told them that I don’t have to change it when I act in Hollywood someday. Today, I’ve made my Hollywood debut and I smile when I recall this day.” Napoleon said he wants to continue doing more films in Hollywood. “Ganesh and I are already discussing doing another project. I have worked in Telugu, Malayalam and other languages as well. I don’t want to restrict myself to one industry. I was nervous about speaking in English in Hollywood, but I realized it’s not as difficult as I thought,” he added. Video - Will not endorse any brand or act in ads: Sivakarthikeyan at 'Velaikkaran' audio launch12/4/2017 THE ACTOR SAID THAT HE'D LEARNT A LOT FROM THE FILM DIRECTED BY MOHAN RAJA. The audio launch of Sivakarthikeyan's Velaikkaran which will mark the debut of Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil in the Tamil industry, took place on Sunday. The film, directed by Mohan Raja, also has Nayanthara, Sneha, RJ Balaji, Prakash Raj and others in the cast. Expected to release on December 22, Velaikkaran is among the most anticipated films of the year. Mohan Raja's last release was the blockbuster Thani Oruvan with his brother Jayam Ravi and Arvind Swami playing a cat and mouse game that had the audience enthralled. The film was also remade in Telugu with Ram Charan in the lead and Arvind Swami reprising his original role. Speaking at the launch, Sivakarthikeyan declared that he will not endorse any brand or act in any ad henceforth because of the questions the film had raised in him. Mohan's Thani Oruvan had a villain from the corporate sector and the film provided an insight on how money controls everything in society. It appears that Velaikkaran, too, will be connected to the same theme. Watch: Velaikkaran has five songs in the track list, all of them composed by Anirudh. All five are available on Saavn.
Karuthuvanlaam Galeejam is an upbeat song that has a "kuthu" effect. Vaa Velaikkara is a chant-like song that hails the "velaikkaaran". Idhayane is a romantic melody. Iraiva is an interesting fusion song. Ezhu Velaikkara is a fast, inspiring number that calls for revolution. Sivakarthikeyan is Kollywood's fastest rising star. His last film Remo with Keerthy Suresh, though panned by critics, was a huge hit. Anirudh had composed the music for this film as well.
Akshay Kumar's Padman and Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2 will clash at the box office on Republic Day 2018.
Akshay Kumar's Padman might have avoided box-office clash with Rajinikanth's 2.0, but Khiladi Kumar will now lock horns with Kamal Haasan on Republic Day 2018.
Kamal's Vishwaroopam 2 has been in the making for a long time, but the shooting was put on hold for some time due to his other work commitments. And now the actor has resumed the shooting of the film. The last schedule of the film is being shot in Chennai. Trade Analyst Ramesh Bala took to Twitter to share the news and wrote, "Ulaganayagan @ikamalhaasan has resumed Vishwaroopam2's final leg of shoot in #Chennai recently. Movie will release for #RepublicDay2018. Trailer will release sometime in Dec."
KEERTHY PLAYS SAVITRI IN 'NADIGAIYAR THILAGAM'. Keerthy Suresh is fast emerging as one of the finest heroines in the film industry, and the roles that she has been bagging proves this beyond doubt. The young actor is busy with a slew of films in Tamil and Telugu, and the most challenging role that she has ever done happens to be the role she plays in the bilingual Mahanati / Nadigayar Thilgam, in which she is playing legendary actor Savitri.
Speaking about the film, Savitri said, “90% of the audience only knows Savitri through her onscreen image. To bring out that difference was the tough part. It’s been a genuinely challenging experience to play Savitri. There are a few sequences from her original films; we have done a scene from Maya Bazaar and a portion of a song from the film. I had to work hard because I cannot use my imagination and have to be completely in her shoes. She was a person who would give 100 expressions in 10 seconds. The way her bold eyes and her lips express an emotion — it is impractical to replicate her precisely. But I wanted to give my best. I have more than 100 costumes (changes) in this film. Savitri’s appearance also changes with age in the film, so we had to go in for a makeover at each stage.” Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film has a plethora of stars in the cast including Mohan Babu, Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Vijay Deverakonda, Shalini Pandey and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles. It may be noted here that Dulquer plays Savitri’s husband actor Gemini Ganesan in the film, which is being bankrolled by Vyjayanthi Movies. While this film’s release date is yet to be announced, Keerthy Suresh’s will have two film releases this Sankaranthi – Suriya’s Thaana Serntha Kootam and Pawan Kalyan’s Agnathavasi. Mollywood SREEKAR PRASAD HAS WORKED WITH MURUGADOSS IN PROJECTS SUCH AS THUPPAKKI AND SPYDER. After delivering blockbusters such as Thuppakki and Kaththi, filmmaker AR Murugadoss and actor Vijay are teaming up for the third time for Thalapathy 62and the project is likely to roll from December this year, reliable sources have confirmed. While it has already been confirmed that Girish Gangadharan, the young lensman whose recent work includes Kali and Solo, has been signed on for the project, it has been learnt that well-known editor Sreekar Prasad, who has worked with Murugadoss in projects such as Thuppakki and Spyder, is also part of the project. The rest of the cast and crew will be finalised soon.
Sun Pictures, best known for producing Rajinikanth’s Enthiran, will bankroll the project on a lavish budget. Double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman is in talks with the makers of the film even while Anirudh Ravichander and GV Prakash Kumar, both known for their successful collaboration with Vijay in films such as Kaththi and Theri respectively, are also said to be in discussions to join the project. The yet-untitled film was supposed to happen even before Theri, but for reasons unknown it was delayed and is finally taking shape. During the release of Akira, his last Hindi outing, Murugadoss had confirmed that a project with Vijay is on the cards. In 2013, he had also tweeted that he will be reuniting with Vijay and he is thrilled about it. It’s tipped to be another action entertainer from Murugadoss, who who is under tremendous pressure to deliver following the debacle of SPYder, his bilingual film with Mahesh Babu. Murugadoss is currently giving final touches to the script which is tipped to be an action entertainer. All eyes are on Thalapathy 62 as the combination of Vijay and Murugadoss has set the bar very high. Two of Vijay's best films in recent years have come from Murugadoss and it naturally has built high anticipation around their next project. It is believed that the project is being planned as a Diwali 2018 release. It might even come earlier if completed on time. Otherwise, the makers will look for a very good festival release date. Banking in the phenomenal success of Mersal, Vijay will be hoping to continue his winning streak with this project. Through the draconian criminal acts of 1871, 1911, and 1924, these people were deprived of their historical past, said the members. Madurai: The ‘Denotified Tribes Welfare Association (DTWA)’ submitted a petition to the district collector Veera Raghava Rao on Monday, requesting him to suspend the screening of the recently released film Theeran Athigaram Onru until scenes depicting denotified tribes in a negative light were removed.
The association demanded removal of the word ‘criminal tribes’ in the first scene, the hero explaining to the Rajasthan police about thugs of 1830s, the hero reading a Tamil history book on criminal tribes, specific reference to names of various denotified and nomadic tribes and derogatory remarks against the ‘Vettaikaran’ community, from the film. “We are wounded by the derogatory depiction of criminal tribes in India. All members from our community and other community members who watched the movie have invariably reported that the movie has depicted denotified tribes in a bad light,” said the members who submitted the petition during the grievances day at the Collectorate. The DTWA members claimed that the director of the movie had not verified historical records and facts because the nomenclature, ‘criminal tribes’, is a British invention to brand and isolate ‘martial aboriginal tribes’ who resisted the expansion of the British, said the members. Through the draconian criminal acts of 1871, 1911, and 1924, these people were deprived of their historical past, said the members. “If those scenes are not removed from the movie, we will organise protests against the film crew for violation of rules across the state,” said the members.
LOSE WEIGHT, GAIN WEIGHT, CHANGE YOUR BODY LANGUAGE? NO PROBLEM, SAYS VIKRAM.
Vikram's built look for Sketch, an upcoming Tamil thriller written and directed by Vijay Chander, has sent Twitter into a frenzy.
The film is expected to release in January this year, with the possibility of a clash with Suriya's film Thaana Serndha Kootam. Sketch also has Tamannaah and Sri Priyanka in lead roles.
Vikram, who won a National Award for Bala's Pithamagan, is known for his ability to change his looks and transform into the character. Though he has delivered hits playing the macho man in many of his films, his fans watch out for roles where the 51-year-old actor stuns the audience with his ability to change his body, voice, and gestures.
Here's a peek at Vikram's different looks over the years. Sethu: Vikram's big breakthrough film had him play a thug who becomes obsessed with a woman, even threatening to kill her if she doesn't reciprocate. He suffers brain damage in a fight and is institutionalised. The film saw the actor lose weight, shave his head and change his body language.
Kasi: The Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njanum, Vikram played a visually impaired singer/poet in this Vinayan directorial. The actor trained hard for the role, practising rolling his eyeballs up so that only the whites of his eyes could be seen. He reportedly practised so hard that his perfect vision changed after the film and he had to wear glasses.
Pithamagan: Vikram played the role of a reclusive man who is brought up in a graveyard and hasn't socialised with anyone. He grunted the few dialogues he had in the film and most of the communication was done through his gestures and body language, not in the least how he moved his facial muscles.
Anniyan: Vikram played three roles in this Shankar film about a man with multiple personality disorder. In one, he was Ambi, a meek Brahmin lawyer, in another he was Remo, a model, and the third one, he was a vigilante serial killer called Anniyan. The Anniyan look with the unique way in which he moved his eyes won him praise.
Deiva Thirumagal: Based on the Hollywood film I am Sam, this AL Vijay directorial had Vikram play the role of a father with the intellectual ability of a six-year-old. The film received mixed reviews and Vikram's performance, too, faced criticism from certain quarters.
I: Pairing up again with Shankar, this film was a thriller about a bodybuilder who goes on a spree to extract revenge from the people who turned him into a "monster". Vikram's two looks from the film – a bright-eyed bodybuilder with big muscles and a man suffering from muscular dystrophy – were startling even if the film itself received mixed reviews.
Iru Mugan: Vikram played the hero and the antagonist in this film. The villain, Love, was a stylish queer person. While the negative characterisation adds to stereotypes about the LGBTQI community in cinema, Vikram's Love was far more dignified than the average representation.
Vikram is, without a doubt, among the most versatile actors of his generation. Among women actors, the Malayalam industry's Parvathy is known to be quite the chameleon.
