Inability to secure visas may adversely affect company’s business, says IT firm Cognizant Technology Solutions shifted almost 8,000 jobs out of India in 2017, while adding positions in North America, according to the company.
“We had approximately 2,60,000 employees at the end of 2017, with approximately 50,400 in North America, 13,800 in Europe and 1,95,800 in various other locations throughout the rest of [the] world, including 1,80,000 in India,’’ the IT services company said in its annual report In 2016, the U.S.-based company had a headcount of 1.88 lakh in India, out of a total of 2,60,200, with almost 47,500 jobs located in North America. The shifting of 8,000 jobs out of India must be read in the context of the Trump administration’s increasingly tough stance on immigration and tightening of visa norms. Regulatory risks Cognizant said that “risks relating to legislation and government regulation on immigration may affect our ability to compete for and provide services to customers, which could hamper our growth and cause our revenues to decline.’’ “The ability of foreign nationals to work in the U.S., Europe, Asia Pacific and other regions in which we have customers depends on their and our ability to obtain the necessary visas and work permits for our personnel who need to travel internationally,’’ it added. “If we are unable to obtain such visas or work permits, or if their issuance is delayed or if their length is shortened, we may not be able to provide services to our customers or to continue to provide services on a timely and cost-effective basis, receive revenues as early as expected or manage our delivery centres as efficiently as we otherwise could, any of which could have a material adverse effect on our business, results of operations and financial condition,’’ the NASDAQ-listed firm said. The IT major said that the anti-outsourcing legislation, if adopted, and negative perceptions associated with offshore outsourcing could impair its ability to service customers. These could adversely affect its business, results of operations and financial condition, it added. The search results are intended for informational purposes only and users should always consult a doctor for medical advice and treatment. As more and more people seek Google's advice first when it comes to health symptoms before visiting a doctor, Google India on Tuesday rolled out its feature called "Symptom Search" in India that lets users find quality health information on their smartphones. In collaboration with a team of doctors from Apollo Hospitals, the tech giant will add tailor-made information about commonly-searched symptoms in its Search.
When a user searches for symptoms like "cough and pain", the app will show a list of related conditions ("common cold, acute bronchitis, flu, pneumonia, chest infection"). For individual symptoms like "headache," the app -- currently available in English and Hindi -- will show digital cards, providing users with an overview description along with information on self-treatment options and what might warrant a doctor's visit "This is a significant trend and we are happy to have partnered on this initiative with Google. At Apollo Hospitals, we have always made optimal use of digital technology for the benefit of patients," Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited, said in a statement. "With the launch of the 'Symptom Search Project', we aim to provide quality healthcare information which can be accessed by a billion Indians," Reddy added. Notably, the search results are intended for informational purposes only and users should always consult a doctor for medical advice and treatment, Google cautioned. Roughly one percent of searches on the search are symptom-related and with this, Google aims to help users navigate and explore health conditions related to various symptoms and quickly get to the point where they can talk to a health professional or do more in-depth research on the web. Has Ileana secretly tied the knot with her boyfriend as suggested by her Instagram post? Actress answers. Despite Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma never admitting to their relationship nor revealing their marriage plans, the whole world expected an announcement and were not caught off-guard when they finally tweeted the news.
However, that was not the case with Ileana D’Cruz and her boyfriend (or husband) Andrew Kneebone. In December last year, the actress shared a blurry picture of herself with a Christmas tree on Instagram, but the post giving photo credit to her ‘hubby’ set tongues wagging. The actress reacted to the post in a recent interview to a tabloid and the answer is maybe clearer or maybe not. “It’s exactly what you see. What’s great about the social media is that I can let people in to an extent but I don’t like talking about my past… How the relationship started and where… in interviews. It’s too personal. I won’t hide it and I won’t deny it. Everything is out there for everyone to see, don’t ask me too many questions about it. I’ll tell you what I want to tell you. Period,” Ileana told Mumbai Mirror. When probed further, she laughed and said, "Like I said, everything is out there, I don’t need to answer your question.” Andrew is an Australian photographer and while the topic of nepotism in Bollywood is always debated, Ileana has never thought about him joining the industry. “I don’t know, I’ve never asked him. That would be a really big move but I also know that he is someone who would love to do something like that. He’s taken some really cool pictures of Varun (Dhawan) and Alia (Bhatt) on a flight, Ranveer (Singh) and Salman (Khan) during a show I did with them. He’s great with photos but him moving here and making a career in Bollywood is something only Andrew can answer. I think he’ll totally be up for it!” she said. Not just the headline-grabbing Instagram post, Ileana’s profile is filled with numerous lovey-dovey moments with Andrew. The man, who is good with pictures is equally effective with his words, praising his love's work and even being honest with her during tough times. “He does (watch her films) and is amazingly honest. He spoils me with his compliments. He’s like, “You’re such an amazing actor, you’re really good!” and I’m like, 'You don’t have to say that just because you love me.' But I think he really means it and it means a lot to me because I know he is someone who will never lie even to me. Sometimes, I’m really upset if a film hasn’t done well and he’ll watch it and tell me what he felt was wrong. It matters to me what he thinks,” Ileana shared. Andrew will surely be looking forward to her next, ‘Raid’ opposite Ajay Devgn, which will hit the theatres on 16 March. Sridevi is no more. The lady superstar passed away in Dubai after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. #RIPSridevi Actress Sridevi, 54, one of the most celebrated actresses of the Hindi film industry, and widely regarded as its first female superstar, has passed away.
According to sources, the English Vinglish actress had gone to Ras al Khaimah for Kapoor's nephew Mohit Marwaha's wedding. While her husband and daughter Khushi returned to Mumbai, Sridevi stayed back in Dubai, where she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Her elder daughter, Janhavi Kapoor, hadn't joined the family for the celebrations as she is shooting for her debut film, Dhadak, which is expected to release in July this year. Incidentally, Boney Kapoor's first wife, Mona Kapoor, too had passed away, months before her son Arjun's film debut. She made her debut in 1978 with "Solva Sawan". But it was only after five years, that she gained commercial success with Jeetendra-starrer "Himmatwala". Sri Devi had worked in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada. She was awarded with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2013. After starring in home production "Judaai", she had taken a 15-year break from movies. She had continued to remain a powerhouse of talent after her comeback with 2012's "English Vinglish". She stunned fans with her performance as a villainous queen in "Puli", which also marked her comeback to Tamil cinema after a gap of more than two decades. She described herself on Twitter as "Actor-MOM-Housewife-Actor Again!" US Immigration officers could seek detailed documentation from companies to establish that they have specific assignments in a specialty occupation for the H-1B beneficiary Trump administration has also made the process of extension of H-1B visas more difficult The Donald Trump administration has just made it more difficult for companies and individuals to get H-1B work visas. And even if one gets it, it may not be for a full three years, as has been the practice. Indians and Indian IT companies will feel the impact the most because they are the biggest users of this visa. The shorter durations may even make the transition from H-1B to a Green Card next to impossible.
A policy memorandum issued by the US Citizenship & Immigration Services on February 22 said its officers could seek detailed documentation and more evidence from firms to establish that they have specific assignments in a specialty occupation for the H-1B beneficiary, and that they have these assignments for the entire time requested on the petition. If the company is able to only demonstrate that the beneficiary will have the specified work for less than three years, the visa would be granted for that lesser period. Currently, H-1Bs are issued for three years, and, for a long time, they were extended for three years with few questions asked. Over the past year, the administration has made the process of extension more difficult, compelling Indian IT firms to tell employees on H-1Bs that they may have to return earlier than anticipated. The new rules imply that one may not even now get the initial full three years. IT association Nasscom’s president, R Chandrasekhar, said it would be complicated for an immigration officer to establish the connections between qualifications and tasks, and that in practice this would bring in an element of subjectivity. “The implication of this is there will be a lot more paperwork. A series of executive orders have been coming out. Each one by itself may not be much, but they have cumulatively added up to making it much more difficult and onerous for companies to use the H-1B route,” he said. ‘50% dip in number of Indian visa applicants’ Cyrus D Mehta, managing attorney and founder of New York-based law firm Cyrus D Mehta & Associates, said the new policy reinforces what employers of H-1B workers were already aware of—providing detailed documentation regarding proving the nature of the H-1B worker’s assignment at the client site. “The new policy suggests, however, that additional evidence may also be needed, such as more details in the work orders or in letters from the end client regarding the beneficiaries’ work assignment. While all these issues in the new USCIS policy are already asked for in challenges to the H-1B petition known as Requests for Evidence, it provides more incentive for USCIS to ask for more evidence regarding the specific nature of the H-1B worker’s work,” he said. A consolation is over the past two years, Indian IT’s dependence on H-1Bs has come down sharply, partly through efforts to hire more locals. All major IT companies have plans to scale up the local hires. Nasscom vice-chairman Rishad Premji said that Indian IT firms use less than 20% of the 65,000 H-1Bs issued each year. Chandrasekhar said “in the last two years, the number of visa applications filed by Indian IT firms dropped by 50%”. Chandrasekhar also noted that the US has a shortage of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) workers and these measures on H-1B could end up hurting American firms that Indian IT companies serve. In a move to provide employment to released bonded labourers, a project was launched by the RBLA along with SWELECT Chennai: In a move to provide employment to released bonded labourers, a project was launched by the Released Bonded Labourers Association (RBLA) along with SWELECT Energy Systems at Thirukalukundram in Kanchipuram district on Friday.
A total of 11 families are benefited by the project that helps them earn an income by means of goat rearing, wood cutting, setting up petty shops and running tea stalls. CHENNAI: Ruling AIADMK will mark the 70th birth anniversary of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa by unveiling her full-size statue at the party headquarters here and launching a newspaper in memory of her.
AIADMK's celebrations will begin Saturday morning when party coordinator O. Panneerselvam and joint coordinator Edappadi K Palaniswami unveiling the statue that is being installed near the bust of the late leader's mentor M G Ramachandran on the llawn The bronze statue, which was sculpted in Nellore, was to be installed last year, but the plan was shelved after the then interim general secretary V K Sasikala was jailed in the disproportionate assets (DA) case. The statue will be jointly unveiled by Panneerselvam and Palaniswami, who are running the party affairs after the September 12 General Council meeting nixed the post of general secretary of the AIADMK. After unveiling the statue, the leaders will launch Namadhu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma — the party's new mouthpiece. Namadhu MGR, which was launched by J Jayalalithaa to air her views following the death of her mentor M G Ramachandran in the late 1980s, went on to become the official propaganda arm of the AIADMK till her death in 2016. Jaya TV, launched in 1999, was also an integral part of Jayalalithaa's publicity arm. However, both the organisations went to the control of V K Sasikala family after the AIADMK split into two factions - one led by EPS-OPS and the other led by T T V Dhinakaran - leaving the party bereft of any mouthpiece. The newspaper, which will hit the stands on Saturday, will be edited by party spokesperson Marudhu Azhaguraj, who was removed as editor of Namadhu MGR by the Sasikala family in August last year. Unlike Namadhu MGR, Namadhu Puratchi Thalaivi Amma will be published from major cities in the state. Namadhu MGR is published only from Chennai. The move to launch the newspaper and a television channel, which is in works, was taken after Namadhu MGR and Jaya TV began blacking out news relating to the AIADMK Government since August 2017.
